Soa Ratsifandrihana: Decolonising, one dance at a time

Committing moving bodies to a contemporary form of orality, Soa Ratsifandrihana, the guitarist Joël Rabesolo and performers Audrey Mérilus and Stanley Ollivier draw on their diasporic narratives and origins to tell a story they would have liked to hear or see. The three Malagasy words Fampitaha, fampita, fampitàna, meaning comparison, transmission and rivalry, form variations in which the performers slide in and out of different states and seem to follow a movement in perpetual metamorphosis.
Oral, musical and choreographic stories intertwine in a performance which shifts between orality and movement. It reminds us that bodies, in the same way as words or sounds, carry our stories. This is the second chapter of a diptych that began with her radio piece Rouge Cratère. In it, Soa Ratsifandrihana, who previously made an impact with her solo g r oo v e – was inspired by words and stories that she collected during a recent trip to Madagascar. Her wanderings serve as the basis for exploring how, similar to the process of creolization, several influences can lead to an unprecedented explosion of cultures.
