Sébastien Kheroufi discovered Peter Handke's Par les villages at the onset of his artistic career. It evokes a writer's return to his native village. Amidst the twilight setting in which one universe declines in favour of another, the voices of the “offended and humiliated” break their silence.
Some leave the village, others remain. A brother leaves for the city. He becomes a writer. The other brother and sister stay, finding employment as a manual labourer and a saleswoman. One day, the writer returns to the village, he has inherited the family home. However, between yesterday and today, and between the brother who returns and the brother and sister who never left, a painful, abyss-like wound opens up. In this show, director Sébastien Kheroufi, in close collaboration with Peter Handke, transposes the Austrian author's village into a housing estate in the suburbs of a French city. In the 1960s, fruit trees, and fields of wheat and vegetables still grew here. As we bear witness to the social and geographical divide, and the opposing trajectories within the same family, our entire contemporary history unfurls before us, expressed via our innermost lives.
