The Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and the Festival d’Automne à Paris are co-producers of this show.

For this new performance, titled Inconditionnelles singer, author, and choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza stages her French translation of Kae Tempest’s fervent play, Hopelessly Devoted (2015). Inconditionnelles explores the interstices where love and connection abound.

Chess is in prison facing a lengthy sentence for homicide. There, she meets her soulmate, Serena. When Serena is granted parole, Chess fears losing everything. She begrudgingly participates in a music class taught by Silver, a producer seeking renewed meaning in art. Silver discovers Chess’ resounding voice and becomes her committed advocate. While this encounter might offer hope where Chess has never known it before, she must first face her past to harness her talent. Inconditionnelles marks Dorothée Munyaneza’s first staging of a play, bringing to life her translation of Kae Tempest’s original text and lyrics into French. It is through music that stories of love are grounded, bolstered, and lost in Inconditionnelles. It is therefore through music that Dorothée Munyaneza, in close collaboration with Ben LaMar Gay, seeks to build upon the play’s existing framework so as to explore the protagonists’ inner lives. Indeed, sound seeps and slips between prison bars, acting as a reminder both of the carceral institution and of the world that lies beyond. For this adaptation, Dorothée Munyaneza conceives a unique space in which music and dance boldly blur boundaries, moving characters and audiences alike to feel — wholeheartedly.
