Born in San Sebastian in Spain, Jone San Martin was a member of the Barcelona Ballet, Ballet Nacional de España, Ballet Royal de Wallonie in Belgium, before joining Ballet Frankfurt in 1992. In defining the way William Forsythe works, she turns to Lawrence Durrell: “Truth disappears with the telling of it. It can only be conveyed, not stated.” (Clea, The Alexandria Quartet). And hence her program, divided into two parts, which immerses us in the unique process of choreographic creation put in place by the choreographer with his dancers from Ballet Frankfurt: a solo and a conference-dance on the theme of Forsythe’s choreographic notation. “I would like to talk about the way the dancer uses this material and, through dance, attempt to explain the process which follows the writing up to the point where it becomes choreographic material or elements for improvisation.” Jone San Martin sees this technique as a very unique path, requiring an in-depth knowledge of improvisation techniques before the information contained in a notation can be turned into movement. This implies “unaccustomed levels of freedom and responsibility in its interpretation”, in which any choices made play a determining role in the resulting choreography. Her solo, conceived by William Forsythe, provides a demonstration of this: “He gives me the outline for how it could all fit together, but the content is up to me.” Hers, then, to shape and transform...
