Laborers on cotton plantations in the state of Durango (northern Mexico) first sang canción cardenche, three-voice a cappella polyphony with elements
from ancient hymns brought by missionaries. Two maya women – shamans – from the southern state of Chiapas sing and heal, carrying on traditions
handed down over the centuries.
