For Aaron Copland has Feldman offering sounds without any attempt at polyphony, mere layers of listening and memory. In Sequenza VIII, Berio took the principles of a Bach Chaconne to produce polyphony both elusive and real. The Sonata for solo violin by Jean Barraqué (a world première of a score discovered only last year) retains remnants of classical breathing; while Rihm focuses on the line, edge, boundary, horizon, where substance generates shape, itself constantly changing.
