A wind quintet fuses with the strains of a cabaret-style fanfare; a string quartet mixes up with legendary rock standards such as Be-bop tango and G-spot Tornado. The late, great Frank Zappa’s The Yellow Shark is a musical ‘suite’ that is anything but -- since its 19 parts can be played in any order, and separately. Reich’s work, meanwhile, based on sacred texts, muses about our earthly existence, inspired by an 18th-century Jewish mystic.
