Vaiva Grainytė

The literary work of Vaiva Grainytė (born in 1984, lives and works in Lithuania) oscillates between several genres, ranging from interdisciplinary theatre works to essays and poetry, and has been translated into over ten languages. In her work as a writer, playwright and poet, she adopts a position of anthropological observation, confronting mundane social situations to reveal them in a paradoxical, anti-familiar light. She has been awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art and the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art for the opera-performance Sun and Sea. Created with Lina Lapelytė and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, this opera was presented for the first time in France at the Festival d'Automne. Among her major works, the collection of essays Beijing Diaries (2012) and the poetry collection Gorilla's Archives (2019) were both nominated for Book of the Year awards. More recently, her bilingual (Lithuanian and English), multi-genre novel Roses and Potatoes (2022) playfully deconstructs the stereotypes associated with happiness in the contemporary world.
