Toshiki Okada

Born in 1973 in Yokohama, Toshiki Okada is a playwright, director and novelist. In 1997, he founded the chelfitsch theatre company, and has written and directed all its productions, applying a distinctive methodology recognisable by its highly colloquial language and highly distinctive choreography. In 2005, Five Days in March won the prestigious 49th kunio kishida prize. That same year, Okada took part in the Toyota Choreography Prize with his show Air Conditioner (Cooler), which won him a great deal of attention. In February 2007, he made his literary debut with the collection of short stories Watashi- tachi ni Yurusareta Tokubetsu na Jikan no Owari (The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed), for which he was awarded the Oe Kenzaburo Prize. In 2022, his collection Broccoli Revolution was awarded the 35th Mishima Yukio Prize. Since 2012, he has been a member of the jury for the Kunio Kishida Prize. His first book on theatre theory was published in 2013 by kawade Shobo Shinsha.

The Window of Spaceship 'In-Between'

Toshiki Okada, a critically-acclaimed figure on the Japanese theatre scene, probes the mechanisms and symptoms of our society. Mixing together science fiction and poetry within the confines of a group on a space expedition, his new play The Window of Spaceship ‘In-Between’ tackles the issues of distancing and the definition of humanity.
