Robyn Orlin

Born in 1955 in Johannesburg and nicknamed "the permanent irritation", Robyn Orlin's work reveals the difficult and complex reality of her country by integrating various artistic expressions (text, video, visual arts, etc.). Her early works, including Daddy, I've seen this piece six times before and I still don't know why they're hurting each other (1999) and we must eat or suckers with the wrappers on (2001), won her international recognition. From September 2005 to the end of 2007, Robyn Orlin was in residence at the CND in Pantin, where she created When I take off my skin and touch the sky with my nose, only then can I see little voices amuse themselves... and Hey dude... i have talent... i'm just waiting for god... a solo for dancer-choreographer Vera Mantero. Invited to the Paris Opéra in 2007, she created L'Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato (music by Handel), and two years later presented Babysitting Petit Louis at the Louvre, with eight museum guards. Her recent works include Oh Louis... We move from the ballroom to hell while we have to tell ourselves stories at night so that we can sleep (2017), with Benjamin Pech, Les Bonnes (2019) and we wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with colour... we said 'bonjour' to satan in 1820... (2021), with the dancers of Moving Into Dance Mophatong.

This piece is the fruit of the first encounter between Robyn Orlin and the iconic South African company Garage Dance Ensemble. The latter practices dance theatre which is committed to equality and social justice.
