Lina Lapelytė

Born in 1984, Lina Lapelytė is an artist and musician. She lives and works in Vilnius and London. She creates performances with a strong musical dimension, closely linked to themes of pop culture, gender stereotypes and nostalgia. Her work often involves a singing situation in which amateur or professional performers are confronted with a wide repertoire of music, ranging from mainstream music to opera. These singing actions form a collective and affective event that questions both vulnerability and the constraint of silence. In 2013, she collaborated with Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė and Vaiva Grainytė to create the contemporary opera Have a good Day!. First presented in France at the Festival d'Automne, Sun and Sea (2017), the second project the trio co-created, represented Lithuania at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019 and won the Golden Lion. In 2022, at Lafayette Anticipations, she presented The Mutes, a musical performance by a choir of people with no musical training. She has been invited to take part in exhibitions at the Fondation Cartier, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

Have a Good Day!

Performance Focus

Have a good day! arises from the collaboration of Vaiva Grainytė, Lina Lapelytė, and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė. The three artists turn their focus toward the inner lives of cashiers in a shopping centre. “Good afternoon!”, “Thank you!”, “Have a good day!” : this opera examines what lies behind mechanical statements and their associated perfunctory gestures.
