Kakushin Nishihara

Born in Tokyo in 1971, Kakushin Nishihara is an artist from the Tsuruta school of Satsuma Biwa. At the age of 17, she became the apprentice of Satsuma Biwa master Kinshi Tsuruta and, after his death, a pupil of Kakujo Nakamura. Since her first independent performances in 1997, Kakushin Nishihara has performed in Japan and abroad. In 2015, she organised her first exhibition as a visual artist, entitled Babaroa Chomolungma. Since 2016, she has increasingly performed abroad with the group KINTSUGI, which she formed in France with Gaspar Claus and Serge Teyssot-Gay. Since June 13, 2020, she has been broadcasting her content on her own YouTube channel "Kakushin TV". Through her music and art, Kakushin continues to communicate her attraction to Satsuma Biwa. She regularly collaborates with director Satoko Ichihara, who was invited to the Festival d'Automne in 2024 for her play Yoroboshi: The Weakling.

Kakushin Nishihara

Music

Brought to the public eye by Ryūichi Sakamoto, Kakushin Nishihara takes the biwa, the short-necked lute which is emblematic of Japanese musical tradition, to undreamt of horizons. Her intense presence transforms each of her concerts into an almost shamanic ceremony.
